Our Commitment
Sligo Rowing Club is committed to safeguarding children and young people under the age of 18
who participate in rowing activities within our club. We aim to provide a safe, positive, and
enjoyable environment where young people are treated with dignity and respect and where their
welfare is paramount.
This Safeguarding Statement is prepared in accordance with the Children First Act 2015,
Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children, Sport
Ireland Safeguarding Guidance, and the Rowing Ireland Safeguarding Policy.
Scope
This statement applies to:
● All children and young people under 18 participating in club activities
● All club officers, committee members, coaches, volunteers, members, and
parents/guardians
● All club activities including training, competitions, regattas, camps, trips, and social
events
Risk Assessment
In line with the Children First Act 2015, Sligo Rowing Club has completed a written Risk
Assessment identifying potential risks of harm to children while participating in club activities
and the procedures in place to manage those risks. The Risk Assessment is reviewed regularly
and is available on request.
Safeguarding Policies and Procedures
Sligo Rowing Club has adopted and implements the Rowing Ireland Safeguarding Policy and
has the following procedures in place:
● Appointment of a Club Children’s Officer (CCO)
● Garda Vetting for all relevant personnel
● Clear reporting procedures for child protection and welfare concerns
● Codes of Conduct for coaches, volunteers, junior members, and parents/guardians
● Appropriate supervision ratios for all junior activities
● Safe recruitment, induction, and training practices
● Procedures for managing accidents, incidents, complaints, bullying, and online
communication
All coaches and volunteers working with children are required to complete Rowing Ireland
safeguarding training appropriate to their role.
Reporting of Concerns
Any child protection or welfare concern must be reported without delay to the Club Children’s
Officer. Where appropriate, concerns will be reported to Tusla – Child and Family Agency
and/or An Garda Síochána, in line with Children First and Rowing Ireland procedures.
